Mental & Cognitive Health Services
Comprehensive Mental & Cognitive Healthcare for Sickle Cell Patients
Living with sickle cell disease (SCD) involves complex challenges that go beyond physical health. At UI Health’s Sickle Cell Center, we understand that mental health issues with opioid use among patients with chronic pain and cognitive care are critical components of effective, holistic treatment for individuals with SCD.
Unique Mental & Cognitive Needs of Sickle Cell Patients
In some cases, Sickle Cell Disease is often accompanied by significant emotional and psychological stress. Patients may experience anxiety, depression, and the ongoing strain of managing chronic pain and frequent hospital visits. These mental health challenges can affect treatment adherence and overall quality of life.
Our dedicated team of experts specializes in understanding the challenges SCD may have on a person’s mental, emotional, and cognitive health, and we are here to help patients address their unique needs.
Expanded Access Through Grant Funding
Thanks to generous support from the Illinois Department of Public Health Sickle Cell Prevention, Care, and Treatment Grant, the UI Health Sickle Cell Center is proud to offer enhanced access to services for mental health, safe and effective pain management, and neuropsychology services. This funding allows us to:
- Provide timely evaluations and counseling without long waits or separate appointments.
- Coordinate care seamlessly across medical and behavioral health specialties.
- Deliver patient-centered support that addresses the full spectrum of Sickle Cell Disease challenges.
Embedding these services into our center’s care model allows our team to meet the comprehensive needs of sickle cell patients, helping them live healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Chronic Pain Management & Counseling Tailored for Sickle Cell Disease
Because managing sickle cell pain often involves opioid medications, some patients may face risks related to medication misuse or chronic pain management. Our team’s services provide specialized support to help patients safely manage pain, develop healthy coping strategies, and prevent substance use disorders while ensuring their pain is effectively treated.
Neuropsychology in Sickle Cell Care
Cognitive difficulties, including problems with memory, attention, and processing speed, are common among adults with sickle cell disease. These issues can stem from strokes or chronic oxygen deprivation linked to SCD.
Neuropsychological evaluations at our center assess these cognitive challenges and provide personalized recommendations to help patients better manage their condition. By addressing cognitive health alongside physical symptoms, our neuropsychology team improves treatment compliance and reduces unnecessary emergency room visits for pain crises.
