Lactation Care That Meets You Where You Are
Tuesday, August 26, 2025
Whether you’re pregnant, recently delivered, or navigating pumping and breastfeeding, our International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants provide expert care, consultation, education, and support to help you reach your feeding goals.
We spoke to one — UI Health lactation counselor Angela Martinez — about the benefits of breastfeeding and the resources we have available for new families.
Benefits of Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding comes with a host of benefits for your baby, including complete nutrition and immune-boosting properties to help protect them from illness.
“Breast milk supports healthy growth, development, and weight gain in those important early months,” Angela said. “It can reduce the risk of developing asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, and even childhood leukemia.”
But many parents learning about breastfeeding for the first time may be surprised to learn those benefits extend beyond your baby. Breastfeeding can come with physical and emotional benefits for mom too!
Beyond the physical benefits, breastfeeding encourages bonding through the release of oxytocin — a natural hormone that helps your body heal after childbirth and can promote feelings of calmness and connection. Breastfeeding may also lower the risk of postpartum depression, and when things are going smoothly, can be a convenient and cost-effective way to nourish your baby.
“Mothers who breastfeed often have faster postpartum recoveries,” Angela said. “Breastfeeding can also lower the risk for many long-term diseases, including high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even breast and ovarian cancer.”
How We Can Help
If you’re struggling or feeling unsure on your breastfeeding journey, it is okay to have questions. UI Health offers a virtual prenatal series — including a dedicated breastfeeding class — to help you feel more confident and prepared for your baby’s arrival.
We also know that once your baby is delivered, you’ll probably encounter a wave of new questions, concerns, and emotions. Our post-birth support includes one-on-one lactation consultations to help with feeding, latching, pumping, and more.
Additional Services
UI Health also offers several private pumping rooms across our hospital campus, and if you’re exploring how to get a breast pump through your insurance, we can provide guidance about which options fit your specific needs.
