14th Annual ‘Care of Students with Diabetes’ Conference

Friday, Sept. 26

UI Health will host its 14th annual Care of Students with Diabetes Conference on Friday, Sept. 26.

Hosted by the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes, the Care of Students with Diabetes Conference provides education and training in support of the federal “Safe at School” law, which gives students the right to receive the diabetes care they need to be safe and participate in school activities. It is a state requirement for each school to have at least one representative attend an annual diabetes training.

The conference features presentations, workshops, and other resources to ensure schools provide:

  • Trained staff to monitor blood glucose (blood sugar) levels and administer insulin and glucagon
  • Trained staff to provide diabetes care during field trips, extracurricular events, and all school-sponsored activities
  • Capable students permitted to self-manage their diabetes anytime, anywhere

This year’s conference features a presentation, “Doctor with Diabetes: Living & Learning”, by UI Health pediatric endocrinologist Dr. Guido Alarcon Mantilla. Other featured sessions include:

  • Diabetes Self-Management: Your Students’ Needs
  • Exercise & Diabetes
  • Technology in Diabetes: Insulin Pumps & CGMS
  • Psychosocial Challenges & Tools for Students with Diabetes
  • Diabetes Self-Management Tools Demonstrations
    • Insulin Administration (syringes, pens, pumps)
