Sickle Cell at UI Health
For more than 50 years, UI Health has been a pioneer in sickle cell disease research and treatment. We are consistently ranked among the top 10 institutions in the world for for sickle cell disease based on clinical studies, publications, and NIH funding. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals with sickle cell disease, and reduce acute and chronic complications, ultimately to help our patients have longer and healthier lives
Today, UI Health has cured approximately 60 patients of sickle cell disease through stem cell transplantation — 35 from full-matched sibling donors, 25 from half-matched relative donors.
Our Team
Our interdisciplinary approach to treatment includes top specialists and a strong nursing support system. Patients admitted to the hospital with sickle cell disease benefit from the care of a nursing staff that collaborates with the patient's medical team to provide the best care & manage pain all with a healing touch.

The Sickle Cell Program at UI Health is the largest in the Midwest, providing individualized care for pediatric, transitional, and adult patients. Our hematologists and health care providers work to help patients with health maintenance and pain management, including blood infusion and transfusion therapies sickle cell disease-modifying therapies, sickle cell disease-modifying therapies, neurocognitive and chronic pain management services, and access to specialists focused on sickle cell disease-organ -specific complications.
